The business of sustainability

Some businesses can make money and have a value for everyone.

Businesses should look at more sustainable, production models.

Dave Hakkens
  • Dutch designer and environmentalist
  • focusses on plastics, principally and reusing.
    * 300m tonnes of plastic waste created annually, less than recycled
Problem : People need greater incentive to approach domestic waste recycling.
Solution : highlight ways to turn plastic waste into something .
  • ‘Precious Plastics’ system : 3 pieces of machinery in a home recycling centre 1 shreds plastics, others heat and mould into products: lamps, containers, etc.
  • To ensure users see commercial benefit, Hakkens has created an to sell these. Incentive drives demand!
Sam Stranks
  • scientist from MIT
  • developing lightweight solar conductors from Perovskite
Perovskite : cheap & easy to produce
(salts mixed making which is printed into thin film)
Lighter / efficient panels : many benefits
  • to where needed most; extend solar farms; last longer
  • cheap installation vs. useful – usual cost is a key to renewable uptake
    Coloured Perovskite panels
  • solar cells as coating for skyscrapers, helping new & existing builds to cut down
